The Grand Final of the Japan Open Poker Tour’s 15th Season concluded on Monday at Bagus Place in Ginza, Tokyo.
The tour is sponsored by online poker provider Pokerstars and entertainment company Bagus, which runs popular darts and billiards facilities throughout Japan. The Grand Final is the biggest poker event to be held in Japan and has been taking place since 2011. The tour also has partner events in IR markets such as Manila and Korea.
Poker is not yet a major game in Japan, but nonetheless events held in Tokyo, Osaka, and Nagoya have been popular within the niche market of poker players. In place of cash prizes, players earn the right to play in lucrative tournaments abroad as the Japanese representative by winning these tournaments.
Whether or not poker will be a game allowed in a Japanese casino is still up in the air. However, with gaming regulations and parameters to be clarified in the coming years, these avid Japanese poker players may only have a short wait to find out if their game of choice can be played for winnings domestically.
